In Brazil there are two types of written translations: free and sworn.

Each has its own characteristics, however, sworn translations can be done only by a professional approved through a public competitive examination, and known as a sworn translator.

Free translation of documents

This type of translation is done on regular paper by anyone who is proficient in both languages, and who has the experience and translation skills to translate a document from one language to another. It is used for any purpose that does not specifically require a sworn translation.

2

Sworn translations

These are done by official translators/commercial interpreters (known as sworn) who are liable for their translations both in the civil and criminal spheres. They have lifetime tenure, and full faith and credit are given to their services.

Sworn translations differ from non-official translations in the sense that they are officially required for documents demanding legal acknowledgement (diplomas, passports, official transcripts, birth, marriage and death certificates, probate proceedings, contracts, petitions, legal and immigration documents etc.).

3

Technical translations

These demand a specific knowledge of the field at hand, and of the jargon used therein, whether the syllabus of a course, official transcripts, scientific and medical texts, technical manuals for equipment and software, or court records and their attachments, in the civil, criminal or commercial sphere.
